Dear friends of the Reedsport Main Street Program,
Good morning to everyone! Did you enjoy our unseasonably warm weekend? I spend some of it going through more of my Cascadia disaster plan checklist after watching OPB’s documentary “Unprepared.” As someone recently told me, “There is no such thing as a natural disaster. There are natural occurrences. It’s when you’re not prepared for them that you have a disaster.” How’s your checklist coming along? Here’s something that’s definitely coming along – banners. Yes, the banners have ceased to be an abstract concept and are now physically manifesting themselves around town. Reedsport’s Public Works Department hung the downtown banners last week, and the uptown ones are ready to go up. Those banners look pretty nice in all this sunshine! How many Reedsport businesses are now certifiably Bike Friendly? If you guessed fifteen, you’re right! This program has been such a success. We’ve paved the way (so to speak) to becoming more welcoming to both tourists and locals who wish to leave their cars behind. You can find the full list of certified businesses here: http://tinyurl.com/nz7c8fm Say, did you know that the RMSP has a Facebook page? That’s where you’ll find updates as they happen, salutes to local businesses, historical snippets, prompts for creative thinking, and reminders about why we love our little community so much. It’s meant for anyone in the world who is interested in Reedsport, so pass it on to your friends and family! You can read it even if you don’t have a Facebook account. Take a look at: www.facebook.com/reedsportmainstreet And lastly, our three RMSP committees have set the date for their next meetings. The Promotion Committee will meet at 5pm on October 6th at the Waterfront Restaurant. The Design Committee will meet at 2pm on October 7th in City Hall. The Economic Development Committee will meet at 5:30pm on October 14th at the Waterfront Restaurant. Good job everyone for keeping the ball rolling! Nearly a hundred years ago a small group of determined people first built Reedsport. Today we have a large group of determined people, so what holds us back? I encourage all of you to think big. Think about what makes you excited. Think about what makes you excited enough to pick up a shovel and fall in. As Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Until next time!
