Tomorrow is the day we honor those who served in uniform, and what better way to do it than serve in our community? Come rain or shine, we’ll be out on the town connecting volunteers with places along the highway that need a little love. We’ll be doing projects like cutting back weeds, cleaning up landscaping, picking up trash, pruning unruly shrubbery, and showing everyone who drives by that we care about our town. The rough plan, subject to change: We’ll meet in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area Visitor’s Center parking lot at 10:30am before heading out to tidy up some of our vacant gas stations. Then we’ll come back at noon for lunch underneath the canopy at Wood, Wind, & Sea (Hwy 101 and 10th). We’ll spend the afternoon sprucing up the area around the ODNRA Visitor’s Center. Whether you come for the day, an hour, or just to say hi, we would love to see you! Bring gloves if you have them. We’ll also need/provide pruning tools, rakes, shovels, brooms, and hoes. The Visitor’s Center lost some plants this years, so if you have any native plants like salal or huckleberry that you would like to donate, please bring them by or let me know.
If you would like to volunteer but can’t quite make it this time, never fear! We hope to do many more projects like this in the future. We’re a volunteer organization, so remember that everything we do depends on your support, your energy, your interest, and your love for Reedsport!
Speaking of love for Reedsport, have you checked out our public Facebook page yet? I love bragging on our town, and it’s been amazing to see how many people outside of Reedsport are interested in our area. Last week our tiny little page reached 4000 people! If you have Facebook, make sure that you share our page with your friends. If you don’t have it, you can still read all of our posts at: http://www.facebook.com/reedsportmainstreet
Meetings, we have them! Tonight (Tuesday) the Promotions Committee is meeting at 5pm at the Waterfront Restaurant. This Thursday the 12th the Economic Development Committee will meet at 5:30pm in the conference room at City Hall. Next week on Tuesday the 17th the Board of Directors meets at 5pm in the conference room of City Hall. As always, anyone from the public who can’t get enough of that delicious meeting goodness is welcome to attend our committee meetings.
Last week while I was in Florence to see “Chicago” at the Florence Events Center (a great production, highly recommended!) I got the chance to admire how well they have developed their old town riverfront. As I walked past live music and crowded Friday night restaurants, all I could see was the Reedsport of the future. We’ve gotten past the roughest patch, and now it’s only a matter of time before we add bustling sidewalks to our beautiful setting. Little by little good things are happening thanks to the good people of our community who are committed to seeing Reedsport thrive. So here’s a quote from Anne Frank to finish with: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
Until next time,
Reedsport Main Street Program Coordinator
