Weekly Update - So much to be thankful for!

11/23/2015

Christmas is just a month away, give or take, but we’re getting a jump on it tomorrow with a decorating party. We’ll be preparing the city’s lighted wreaths to hang in time for Thanksgiving, and we need your help! Grab your work clothes and come join us at 1pm Tuesday for some festive fun as we spruce up our wreaths and get them ready to go. We’ll be in the Public Works maintenance shop at 890 Elm Street, just across the tracks from Courtney’s Auto. With enough hands, we should be done in a snap. Contact me if you’d like to participate.

The first round of improvements for the Façade Improvement Project is finished! How many changes have you noticed along our main streets? Some improvements are subtle, like the new river rock in front of the Little Mint, while others like Mindpower Gallery’s new sign and the Maxwell Center’s murals are quite striking. If you, like me, wouldn’t notice if your best friend went from blonde to brunette, then you might not have immediately picked up on the great new colors gracing the Boe Building and the Pirate Mall. The purpose of this project is to make Reedsport look better little by little, and it’s working! We’re hoping that we can keep the project going by offering yet another round of grants, so keep watching for all the new work happening around town.

A big thank you to Central Lincoln PUD for hanging more of our “Welcome to Reedsport” banners in the uptown. I just noticed them on my drive to work this morning, looking so bright and colorful in the morning sunlight. It’s a real miracle when anything catches my attention before coffee has had a chance to sink in, so if I noticed those things, I know I won’t be the only one! Great job to everyone who has worked hard so far to bring those banners from conception to reality.

Just a few more days until Thanksgiving! This year I’m thankful to be celebrating it back home in the USA, although I will miss the reactions of my British friends when I tried to introduce traditional Thanksgiving foods to them. (The yams with marshmallows always raised the most nervous laughter.) Whether you celebrate Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, Buy Nothing Day, or, like I do, Watch Football and Nap Day, I hope that everyone has a great week and very happy Thanksgiving!

All the best,

Katie Lockard
Reedsport Main Street Program Coordinator
